Trained and influenced by the father & son partnership Harold and Derek Thornton: both members of the Manchester Red Rose Guild of Design Craftsmen. Gary's ceramic work naturally leans towards the Leach movement with the same Japanese influences.
As one can see from both his decorative and functional ceramics his influences are from potters such as Lucie Rie and Bernard Leach . He studied at Bath Academy of Art and Leeds Polytechic and holds a 1st class BA (Hons) Degree
Gary is at present a member of the NPA Northern Potters Association and exhibits work in and around the North West and Yorkshire.
Gary Thomas started his career as a young potter in 1970 and worked as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator throughout the 1970's. He has passed on his range of skills in art, design, printmaking and technology at a number of schools and colleges throughout the North in the 1980's.
Gary works from a studio at home and creates decorative bowl and vase shapes formed on the wheel inspired by some of the most basic traditions in the studio pottery.
"A continual development of shape, form, balance, surface texture and colour is the inspiration to produce pottery showing both subtlety and sensitivity"
